DUTY COURAGE INTEGRITY May 1865. All Dan Goodman wants is to marry an uncomplicated girl and have a family, but the war interfered and he became a POW who now believes he’s losing his mind and unfit for marriage. He dreams of Oregon to put the memories behind him. The problem is he owes a debt of gratitude to the beautiful songstress. In addition, Clara Barton wants him to be a witness for the prosecution in the first trial for war crimes in American history. INDEPENDENT ENTERPRISING FEISTY Letty Talbot is a world-weary steamboat songstress, and wants a new direction after sudden loss. Letty decides to run a supply depot for emigrants going out West, and talks Dan into a partnership where he builds the prairie schooners. Letty won’t admit she wants to keep Dan from leaving. Even though they butt heads a lot, no man ever interested Letty as this one did. TRUST LOVE PEACE If Letty marries Dan she losses her depot, because married women have no property rights. Letty must learn to trust God with her future. Dan must forgive fellow Union inmates who killed for selfish reasons, and face the commandant of Andersonville Prison in a court of law. Allowing his Oregon dream to fade, he can then embrace the future God planned for him.

Because of its detailed description and the unique characters this story captured my interest from the start.
The way the author described attire, actions and individual mannerisms brought the heroine and her other
characters to life.

I especially like the way Letty's spiritual progress was displayed and how she and the hero's
Christian beliefs were brought out by their various actions. That alone made this novel a refreshing read compared
to some other so-called inspirational novels where the characters' moral behavior examples do not set a high standard.
The romantic sequences here were very well done.

If you are interested in American history, as I am, you will appreciate the information this book provides about this country's
post civil war western expansion. All of this is well combined with facts of the Andersonville civil war prison camp. Having
written two civil war inspirational novels myself, I know a fair amount about that time period but I have to say that I learned
a great deal by reading this finely well-written inspirational novel. And I look forward to reading other books in this new series!

Very enjoyable reading. It is a heart warming story of change and growth.
It brings understanding to what it is to
be a mature Christian
You will enjoy reading how Dan Goodman's faith in God helped him to survive Andersonville prison, during the Civil War. He meets Letty Talbot and helps her grow stronger in her Christian faith. They fall in love and together enrich the lives of people in Steamboat Alley, a wonderful little town. Letty gets Dan to build the prairie wagons, while she runs a supply depot for people heading out West. I look forward to reading the second book in this new series.
I loved the overall theme of this book but the execution in the details could have been much better. I felt like there were some characters that caught my interest and could have added a lot to the story but the author never fleshed them out. Their story just pittered out. Great potential just didn't quite deliver in content.
I liked the premise, but not the execution. Maybe it's me, but I like to read a story with writing that flows, draws me into the story world, and makes me feel for the characters. I came close with Dan, but I didn't care about the heroine and her brother. I can't even tell you her name. Not even when her brother was shot did I feel anything coming from her to make me sympathetic. I had to give up in the beginning of chapter 3. This was a debut, so I hope newer works are better.
It was a very good read. Held my interest from first page. I didn't want to put it down when it became later at night. So I didn't! I read it at once sitting. I didn't want it to end. I have not intentionally read any book regarding Andersonville Prison. Many of the Civil War fiction I have read mentioned it briefly.

This story of Dan Goodman and the nighmares that plagued him everynight since his release. Letecia (Letty) Talbot is a beautiful woman who is a singer and entertains her brother Eddy, a professional gambler.

This is a new novel by Diane Kalas and I look forward to any further novels that she may write. I love the 18th and 19th century era's and truly enjoy reading about the Civil War era.
I enjoy historical fiction. Throw in a bit of romance and I'm hooked. Author Kalas does a credible job in both aspects. The main characters of Letty and Dan make strong memorable impressions although at times they acted a little surreal. The sub plots and secondary characters heighten interest. I especially liked Ma, Cal and Newt.
I have studied this point in history as I had ancestorial grandfathers in the Civil War. They fought for both sides but were mostly Confederates. One was killed, two were prisoners. So the 'soldier scenes' tugged at my heart and made me tear up.
At times, the changing scenes and the changing points of view were tricky to follow, but overall I enjoyed the book and look forward to other books by this author.
Ms. Kalas knows her Civil War era history, and it shows in many details throughout this romance between two opposite personalities from very different backgrounds. The reader can relate to her characters and their struggles. I admired the songstress' strength and determination and sympathized with the former Union soldier's mental anguish, a result of the horrors he experienced in the Andersonville Confederate prison. This part was an interesting history lesson much of the prisoners' suffering was caused by Union hoodlums. Even if you are not a fan of Christian romance, I think you will find this a good read from both the historical aspect and the story line. I bought two copies of the book, one as a gift. Looking forward to her next two books in this series.
